The so-called ‘compensation culture’ has become big business. A legion of claims management companies has sprung up, raising false hopes of the chance to turn every accident into easy money.

We are constantly bombarded by sensational advertising on television and radio and in the press from claims management companies. We are approached in the streets, in shopping centres, even in hospitals and doctors’ surgeries.

The idea is that for every accident, someone is at fault. For every injury, there’s someone to blame. And, as the slogan says, where there’s blame, there’s a claim. This, however, is not the law.

All these companies do is raise false expectations, encourage spurious claims and block the courts. The real winners are the claims management companies themselves. They are making millions out of the compensation culture. In very many cases, the actual claimants, Mr and Mrs Joe Public, are left with bills that far exceed any compensation they may receive.
